How to plan vacations despite your busy schedule
Dec 23, 2019For many people around the world, this week marks the beginning of winter vacations, which is considered one of the busiest weeks of the year since the timing goes hand in hand with the Christmas and new Year’s celebrations.
Our hope is that you start 2020 fabulously, that’s why we want to give you some tips so that you can give yourself that well-deserved time off to rest and enjoy a nice vacation with your loved ones.
#1 Plan the time you want for vacations ahead of time.
Vacations are a goal that all people in the world have in common, since we count the minutes until our time off, when we can forget our jobs and dedicate our time to enjoy life. But vacations, like any goal, have to be visualized and we have to work on different objectives so that we can take advantage of them as much as possible.
It doesn’t matter what you decide to do during your days off, what’s important is that you maximize your enjoyment and that you leave your work at the office, because there’s nothing worse than returning from vacation frustrated because things didn’t go as you wanted them to.
Therefore, visualize yourself in that place where you will be spending your vacations, establish a budget, make a list of the activities you want to do and the time needed for each one of them, this way you will ensure that your time is well-spent and that you can rest and enjoy it as you should.
#2 Make sure you leave all your work finished.
An overwhelmed mind doesn’t work, even when on vacation, whether you are fortunate enough to have time off with no responsibilities or if during your vacation your job must operate without you.
Finishing all that is pending before you leave on vacation is essential if you want to enjoy them 100%, and by this I mean that you have to finish the responsibilities you have on that last day of work as well as those that need to be done during your time off. Not only will this give you peace of mind, but your co-workers will feel confident that things will go on as usual.
For this, we recommend that you make a list of everything that’s pending, including those tasks that you have to perform in your job, even those that need to be done in your absence, and you can anticipate everything with no problem.
#3 Prepare solutions to possible eventualities at work
And this can sound complicated, but really think, no one but you can know best what can go wrong in your job. What you perform constantly makes you an expert in that area and in the variables you face, and when adapting to the parameters and generating solutions, you have acquired experience that no one else has. That’s why you have to identify and anticipate, obviously there are unexpected issues that are unique and have unusual importance, only focus on those that come up periodically, for these that you can foresee, it’s important that you let the person you designate to cover for you about them, even leaving them a list of solutions, so that said person can do whatever it is without any problems.
#4 Train specific people that could solve your responsibilities in your absence.
You are not going to ask one person only to do all of your work, and nobody, no matter how well they know you, will do the work the same way that you do, when it’s time to delegate responsibilities, as you read in our previous blog, it’s important to consider if the people who are covering for you are qualified, if they have the necessary time and skills to do the task without harming you or even your company.
You also have to consider their schedule, since that person already has their own responsibilities and when it’s time to prioritize, helping out someone else in their job tends to be at the bottom of the list. Don’t forget to keep an eye on those people you trained to help you, be grateful and show them that you trust them.
#5 Establish a set time for contacting you and create a directory of who is responsible for your solutions.
One of the best ideas in order for you to enjoy your vacation without having to worry about work is that you schedule a short and specific time that they can reach you during your time off in case of some emergency, however, having chosen different trustworthy and trained people can take some weight off of your designees and will offer the confidence of a favorable outcome regarding the remote execution of your activities.
#6 Disconnect and enjoy your loved ones.
We all enjoy the undivided attention of the people around us and there’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to enjoy your vacation because you are worried about work, therefore designate short periods of time during the day to check your messages and emails, then forget the cell phone and work and enjoy your vacation 100%.
