Avoid negative thoughts that hold you back
Jul 22, 2019Many times we find unique opportunities in our path and we decide not to take them because of our own negative thoughts, those are the only signals we send to our brain, and they carry with them emotional baggage that leads us to believe that the best decision is to let that opportunity pass by. The reality is that we self-sabotage ourselves more often than you think, here you will find the most common negative thoughts that could be holding you back and how to avoid them.
The 5 most common negative thoughts:
1.- I can’t: This is the most destructive negative thought, and within it we can include thoughts like “it’s too late” or “I’m not good enough”. These thoughts lead you to believe that you are not capable of doing something even when you have not yet attempted to do it. The worst thing is that this brings us to the million-dollar question: “What would have happened if…”
Don’t keep wondering, you will never know what you are capable of or not capable of until you try. We invite you to change that phrase to “How can I make this a reality”, perhaps you are not ready yet, but this phrase invites you to look for ways to reach that which you are thinking of. Remember that right now is the best time to try, and that maybe the perfect moment will never come.
2.- Many things could go wrong: You have to stop being afraid of the things that could go wrong, and start focusing on everything that could go right.
Be grateful for all the positive things that happen during your day and find the positive in each negative experience. Use this new positivity in your favor and you’ll see that life will smile at you.
3.- Someday I’ll do what makes me happy: Many times we concentrate so much on searching for ways to make the people around us happy, that we don’t even realize how unhappy we become ourselves.
If there is a perfect time to follow your dreams, it is now. Don’t let indecision cause you, at the end of your life, to regret not having followed your dreams and found happiness today.
4.- I can’t trust anyone: It is very common that we close ourselves up to trust in the people around us, and it’s not that they could do something good or that they could distance themselves from us, but the fear that surges in us when we think that we will have to face something bad that could happen, when it hasn’t happened yet. The only way is trying and learning that when occasionally those bad things happen, is when we truly learn and you get stronger.
Give yourself the chance to trust in yourself and in others, it’s possible that someone will not respond in the way you wished them to, but this way, you will not put a barrier between yourself and all those that will respond the way you want them to.
5.- I’ll never get there: Eliminate the word “never” from your vocabulary, you probably have accomplished a lot of things in your life, and perhaps there are other things you have not been able to get. We cannot focus only on those bad experiences, we must change our way of thinking in order to keep reaching the goals we set for ourselves. Changing that word to “I can achieve whatever I set my mind to” opens up the possibility to dream beyond what you currently have and to look for ways to reach anything you set as a goal.
Some thoughts that will help you achieve anything you decide to do:
There is no perfect time: If you start waiting until everything else is set in order to start something, you will always be waiting.
One step at a time: It is impossible to be able to do everything at once or from one day to the next, you have be patient and take it one step at a time, but with persistence, and you will reach your goal.
Progress not perfection: Don’t stress out if something is not perfect, continue to advance and at the end go back to fine tune the details. This way you will save a lot of time.
It’s never too late: It doesn’t matter at what age you want to start a project or change something in your reality, it is never too late to do what you truly want.
